Q Jan 2018 - Thank you Sue and Q!!
Ryōkan is remembered for his poetry and calligraphy, which present the essence of Zen life. Ryōkan lived a very simple, pure life, and stories about his kindness and generosity abound. However, even though he lived his simple and pure life, he also displayed characteristics that under normal circumstances would be out of line for a normal monk. source

  1. What I said about breath is a central Tewa Pueblo idea. The Tewa do ritual breathing when gifts are received and when prayerful dances end. The call the breathing-out ritual "hatsiperi" -- literally "heart (ha) - breath (tsiperi)." The breathing-in ritual is "ihakondi" - meaning "heart (ha) - take it (ko)." The Tewa breathe on the hand in delivering or receiving the gift or the blessing. Breath, clouds, wind, and the Life force of the universe are all equivalent. With every breath, the Tewa say, we take into our hearts the life energy of the universe. And, in breathing out, we send the gift from the heart to others, to plants, to relatives, to children and elders, to Spirit Beings. It is a wordless prayer that involves deep gratitude and deep generosity.
